MANHINGA TRUST BACKGROUND

Manhinga Trust is a private voluntary organization that was set up in November 2005 within the framework of the Social Welfare Department of the Apostolic Faith Mission in Zimbabwe (AFM) Church as its development agency. The church has been running welfare programmes which include a children’s home based at Manhinga Village in Rusape that was registered in 1982 and cares for up to 100 orphaned children between the ages of two and eighteen years.

Other social programmes include caring for widows, old people and underprivileged church members and communities in general. Most of the care is provided through local churches and schools located in various parts of the country. The social welfare department also makes an effort to care for socially challenged members of society and communities including those that do not necessarily belong to the church. The intention is to build upon the strength that already exists within the organization both in terms of human resource skills and local structures that are widespread throughout the country.

Prior to the establishment of the Trust most of the social welfare programs have been concentrated at the orphanage. A full time Director has supervised the orphanage since 2000, assisted by a loose management committee that meets periodically. As such it has not been possible to have a consistent and tight strategic plan and budget for the orphanage and the entire social welfare department. Most of the work has had to be run on an ad hoc basis, resulting in a significantly limited impact on the number of people in need of support who have been reached.

Therefore due to limited financial support and the absence of a properly coordinated and managed social welfare programme, the church has not been able to adequately satisfy its mandate of caring for the physical needs of the communities in which it serves. Instead the main focus of attention for the church has remained that of spiritual care. Due to increasing economic hardships, loss of parental care caused by the high incidence of HIV&AIDS and other factors, there has been a growing recognition of the need for the church to focus its attention towards caring for socially disadvantaged communities.

It is against this background that a decision was taken by the church authorities to create a separate and independent arm of the church that would be responsible for coordinating its social welfare programmes. The major advantage of such an independent Trust is that it will have greater flexibility and capacity to concentrate on community development activities without interfering with the normal day-to-day church activities. It would also be in a better position to tap into the various expertise available and link up with non church-based organizations doing similar work. The capacity to source additional funding and engage in income generating projects would be greatly enhanced under this new arrangement.
